For People with MS

FOR PEOPLE WITH MS

Your Family Can Help Us Plan Future Research

If you have MS and receive care at the UCSF Multiple Sclerosis Center, you may receive a letter or be approached in clinic about completing the PREVENT MS Family Research Questionnaire.

Why Am I Being Asked?

Researchers at UCSF are working toward future studies that may help prevent MS before it begins. Before these studies can move forward, we need to learn whether enough people who may qualify could be interested in taking part.

People who have a biological parent or sibling with MS may have a higher chance of developing MS. Your answers can help us learn how many family members may be in the age range for future PREVENT MS research.

PREVENT MS FAMILY RESEARCH QUESTIONNAIRE

What Will I Be Asked?

The questionnaire takes about 2 minutes. It asks a few questions about your biological children and siblings.

Adult Children

Whether you have biological children ages 18–29 and whether you would be willing to share PREVENT MS information with them.

Biological Siblings

Whether you have biological siblings ages 18–29 and whether you would be willing to share PREVENT MS information with them.

Children Ages 12–17

Limited information to help researchers plan possible future PREVENT MS research involving adolescents.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

The Questionnaire Is the Only Step for You

Completing the Family Research Questionnaire does not enroll you or your family members in the PREVENT MS feasibility study.

You will not have a blood draw, receive a vaccine, or complete any other study procedures as part of this questionnaire.

IF A FAMILY MEMBER IS INTERESTED

What Happens Next?

01

Share the Information

You can share information about PREVENT MS with an interested biological child or sibling who is 18–29 years old.

02

Your Family Member Contacts Us

If they are interested, they can contact the PREVENT MS Study Team directly to learn more.

03

They Decide for Themselves

The study team will explain the feasibility study and whether they may be able to participate. Your family member can decide whether taking part is right for them.

Your Family Member Chooses Whether to Contact Us

The questionnaire is designed to help us understand how many potentially eligible family members there may be. An interested adult family member contacts the PREVENT MS Study Team directly to learn about participating in the feasibility study.

Completing the Questionnaire Is Your Choice

The questionnaire is voluntary. Choosing whether or not to complete it will not affect your medical care at UCSF.
